1543-1623. British composer. His church
choral music (set to Latin words, as he was a
firm Catholic) represents his most important
work. He also composed secular vocal and
instrumental music. He became organist at
Lincoln cathedral in 1563. He shared with
Tallis the honorary post of organist in Queen
Elizabeth's Chapel Royal, and in 1575 he and
Tallis were granted a monopoly in the
printing and selling of music.
